Tikanga: An introduction to te ao Māori

The pepeha or ‘Māori introduction’ is a staple in the life of Māori. It is a familiar template of phrases that defines and describes wiki/hapū/whānau for Māori folk but also associations, backgrounds, and whakapapa for non-Māori.

Don’t sit or lean your behind on a table. Based on the concept of tapu and noa, the body part is tapu and the table is where the kai goes so is therefore noa. Mahi (work) is noa so this applies to work desks too.

Here, in practical terms, is something that anyone can do to show respect for te ao Māori: learn to pronounce te reo Māori well.

Try not to add the letter ‘s’ to Māori words, e.g. iwis, hapūs, maraes. Many words are both singular and plural.
