Upstart Press was started in late 2013 by Kevin Chapman (formerly Managing Director of Hachette NZ and Anne Geddes Publishing), Patricia Dunmore (the founder of Dunmore Press and an internationally published author) and Warren Adler (formerly Editorial Director of Hachette and previously a director of Rugby Press).
The aim of Upstart has always been to publish across the trade book categories (fiction, non-fiction and children’s) and primarily in areas that were of interest to the founders. Books were from the beginning published under two imprints – “Mower” for sports books and “Upstart” for other categories.
After settling down Upstart then began to offer warehousing and distribution services to other NZ publishers, and at the moment distributes 11 other NZ publishers from its Penrose distribution facility. Then from 2018 Upstart took on four sales agencies as well, one New Zealand publisher (Lee Lamb), one from Ireland (O’Brien Press), one from Canada (Nimbus Books), and an environmental notebook line out of Lebanon (Dingbats Notebooks).
The aim of Upstart is to publish books of general interest and to provide a distribution service that puts customer service at its centre.
