Joseph Romanos

During a long career as a sports writer, Joseph Romanos has worked for newspapers and magazines in New Zealand, Australia and England. He had a stint living with his wife, Gael, in Germany, where he was a professional squash coach, but the lure of writing about sport drew him back to journalism. He’s always had a particular affinity with the Olympic Games — he has attended 10, stretching back to Seoul in 1988, and has seen the tremendous drama that sport at the very highest-level produces.

Joseph, a proud Wellingtonian, notes that he has interviewed at least one athlete from every New Zealand Olympic team, right back to the first in 1920. Not surprisingly, he has amassed a huge collection of fascinating stories about what went right and what didn’t on the biggest of all sports stages. Joseph has written more than 50 books
