Scientist and historian Joanna Orwin was born in Nelson and educated at Canterbury University, where she studied botany, geography and Māori language and culture. She worked for more than 30 years as a science editor. Since leaving Landcare Research she has written on New Zealand history, culture and natural science. She is also a prize-winning author of historical and adventure novels for children and young adults, all with a strong sense of landscape.
